Dark Skies over Witten VII
This was our first overseas jaunt after Brexit and COVID, and it wasn’t easy! Industrial action meant most airports and train stations in Germany were shut, so bands had been pulling out, and we figured we’d take the call for a last-minute headliner and see what happened.
It was a slog! The way out was OK (strikes weren’t in force until the return leg), and we managed to catch a train to Dortmund from Cologne before making the last bit of the trip by taxi. In spite of a bit of a technical shitshow, in which a backdrop decided to descend between Mick and his drums, it was a fun night and we got to have a long overdue catch-up with some old friends.
The way home though, a coach from Dortmund to Rotterdam, was not fun. In particular, Ding’s ridiculous height was a barrier to comfort on a crowded deck, and it happened to be his birthday too! So fair play to him for managing, although it’s not something we plan to do again! The ferry to Hull is always a laugh but we were very glad to be home after this one.
